Hours later, I was curled up in thin blankets on the mattress. Uncomfortable and cold, I was naturally restless. Amyâs soft snores were the nightâs only sound. I turned over again and again before kicking off the itchy cover. I stared blankly at the ceiling in nothing but boxer shorts and finally felt fatigue massage my eyes. I shifted once more to face to the right, and my vision shot through the bottom of the bed.
A pair of eyes glared at me from under it the moment before I closed my eyes. I immediately sprung awake again and madly searched for them. Nothing. I reassured myself with a glance at the door, sealed tightly with screws.
âYouâre safe,â I told myself and shut my eyes again.
Quick as a cheetah, a wrinkly hand was around my throat, squeezing tightly. A golden watch slid down its forearm. The eyes reappeared from the shadows. A reborn. I tried to call for Amy, but no sound expelled from my throat. Its other hand grabbed my foot to prevent me from jumping up to grab the spear above me. It dragged me under the bed, and I writhed and kicked, both of my hands concentrated on removing the grip around my throat. My head throbbed, and my senses dulled. I gave a promising kick to its stomach, the force lifting it to hit the base of the bed. Its grip on me loosened. Amy didnât stir.
I wrenched its hand from my neck and snatched the watch from its arm, wrapping it around my left fist and delivering a stunning punch with the force of the metal.
âAmy!â I screeched. âReborn! Reborn!â
She shot up and withdrew a knife from the pillowcase next to her. She spotted its legs dumbly poking out from the back and came down on its back, tattering its polo shirt with knife marks. It wailed and scrambled to escape from under the bed. Amy grabbed it by its hair and slid her knife across its throat.
We both caught our breath as blood dispersed across the carpet. âHow did this one get through?â I croaked, massaging my neck.
âWe left the room unattended to have the fire. Shit! We were so careless.â
Ring! Ring Ring! Ring! Ring! Ring!
âThe bell. The cover will hold, wonât it?â
My question was answered a moment later with an intense bang against the timber. It splintered slightly.
âI left my hammers outside the room,â Amy confessed. A more considerable thump hit the wood, and it cracked. âAnd I found a sledgehammer. I thought it could be useful!â
I groaned heavily. If our only exit was sealed, what could we do?
Smash!
Glass rained down onto the bed. Amy was holding my spear and jabbing the ceiling window. Knowing we wouldnât reach it, I jumped to the wardrobe and shuffled out with the ironing board. Amy and I swapped items, and I held my spear poised at the entrance.
Amy unfolded the board and precariously balanced it atop the bed. She hoisted herself up onto it, and it toppled over as the bed rolled wildly.
